C.2 - Philosophies and Goals of Instruction Program

C.2 - Philosophies and Goals of Instruction Program

Overall Instruction Program Goals:

  • Develop multi-module, multi-season umpire curriculum, with student & instructor materials and manuals

Instructor Goals:

  • Divide & conquer over-whelming material to be learned.
  • Start with less complex techniques & concepts
  • Allow students opportunity (time) to develop proficiency of level before moving to the next level
  • Let students enjoy success at this level before pouring on more teaching material
  • Watch out for instructors throwing too much at students & overwhelming them
  • Prevent instructors from “over-teaching” - stay to curriculum outline
  • Everything will be taught in time - the time for everything is not right now.
  • Instruction material will be layered over several instruction levels.
  • Plan & teach in organized & progressive stages.
  • Create umpires in the following progression: “spot”, “textbook” and “dynamic”
  • Use each stage as learning rest stop so students can gain proficiency
  • Gradually move students toward “dynamic” level where conceptual & complex application of each concept is always achieved.

Learning Task Sequence:

  • Read Material
  • Homework Exercises
  • Listen to Lecture
  • Written Notes
  • Small Group Discussions or Projects
  • Explain to Someone

Performance Task Sequence:

  • Observe Demonstration
  • Perform “Dry” Drill
  • Perform “Shadow” Drill
  • Perform “Practice” Drill
  • Perform “Live” Drill

Performance Evaluation Scale:

  • 0 = “Novice” – (Unconscious-Incompetence = UI) Student has no understanding of concept and cannot perform “text book” technique ant of the time
  • 1 = “Basic” – (Conscious-Incompetence = CI): Student has an understanding of concept and can perform “textbook” technique properly as many times as not (50%)
  • 2 = “Beginner” – (Conscious-Competence = CC1): Student has a good understanding of concept and can perform “text book” technique 75% of the time.
  • 3 = “Intermediate” – (Conscious-Competence = CC2): Student has very good understanding of concept and can perform “text book” technique 90% of the time.
  • 4 = “Superior” – (Conscious-Competence = CC3): Student has superior understanding of concept and can perform “text book” technique all of the time.
  • 5 = “Accomplished” – (Unconscious-Competence = UC1): Student has superior understanding of concept, can perform “text book” technique all the time and can adjust to changing situations most of the time.
  • 6 = “Advanced” – (Unconscious-Competence = UC2): Student has superior understanding of concept, can perform “text book” technique and can adjust to changing situations all the time.
