Interference because the runner is not in the running lane????

Runner on 3rd with less than two out. The batter hits the ball to the right side of the infield. The first baseman fields the ball and tags first. The runner from 3rd is coming home. The batter runner is running up the first base line in fair territory (not in the running lane). The first baseman pulls the ball back to throw but doesn’t throw the ball due to the runner in fair territory about 2/3 the way up the line. Do you call the runner from 3rd out on interference from the batter runner because he is not where he is supposed to be?

3 foot lane

According to rule 8-4-1-g when does the batter runner have to be in the three foot running lane?

With that answer in mind, what does 8-4-2-g say about interference on a thrown ball?

The answer is no. The rule is the same for any base. However, if the runner changes direction or does anything to cause interference, the B/R is
out and R3 may also be called out for interference. In the example the ball was never thrown and the B/R did not cause interference so the play stands.

The three foot lane begins half-way between the plate and the first base bag: ie: 45ft. There is no violation in the first 45ft. After that the B/R must be in the 3 ft lane until he reaches the first base bag. To be in violation, he must have at least one foot on to ground outside the line and on the same side of the line the throw is originating from. Therefore, if the B/R is on the opposite side of the line, trying to avoid interfering with the throw to first base even though he is outside the lane, he IS NOT interfering and shall not be called out for interference.

I don't have a copy of the Rule Book but I assume you are talking about the throw to first base. If the B/R is in violation and the ball hits him, the B/R is out and all runners must return to their last legally occupied base. No runners may advance. If the B/R is in the running lane, the play stands. If he is in violation and the throw is a "quality throw" but is misplayed by the first baseman due to the B/R being in violation, the B/R shall be ruled out due to interference and no runners may advance.
